Kien Giang builds a drug-free border and sea islands

Kien Giang directs to strengthen the construction of communes, wards, borders, and islands “Drug-free” in conjunction with the implementation of directives and resolutions on crime prevention and control.

The report of the People's Committee of Kien Giang province at the recent provincial People's Council meeting stated that in the first 6 months of 2024, 215 cases of illegal possession, transportation, and sale of drugs were detected. The source of drugs from Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring provinces is transported through passenger car stations and freight services. Drugs disguised as food, beverages, and electronic cigarettes were found in some localities; the situation of organizing illegal drug use in motels and hotels still occurs.

However, the number of addicts and illegal drug users has decreased compared to the beginning of 2024 due to effective propaganda, handling, and rehabilitation efforts.

The provincial police have issued many plans for crime prevention and drug prevention in 2024. They established the Office and Branch Office for cross-border drug and crime prevention liaison with Kampot province, Kingdom of Cambodia.

Major Truong Van Quoc, Head of the Youth Committee of Kien Giang Provincial Police, said that following the directive plan of the Director of Kien Giang Provincial Police to build 15 drug-free border, island communes, and wards, the Youth Committee of the Provincial Police and Kien Luong District Youth Union recently signed an agreement to implement the model "Youth Team with 4 No's on Drugs". In the initial phase, the focus will be on two island communes, Son Hai and Hon Nghe (Kien Luong district), then summarize and expand it across the entire district.

In Phu Quoc City, according to statistics for the first 6 months of 2024, 34 cases involving 50 individuals were detected for illegal transportation, sale, possession, and organization of drug use, seizing more than 1.37 kg of various drugs, and sending 128 drug addicts to rehabilitation.

At the launch ceremony of the 2024 Drug Prevention Action Month, Chairman of the People's Committee of Phu Quoc City Huynh Quang Hung stated: The city calls on everyone to join hands to eliminate drug evils, contributing to building a civilized and healthy community. Phu Quoc is a famous tourist destination both domestically and internationally, so maintaining a good image is very necessary, and everyone must be concerned.

To effectively carry out drug prevention work in the coming time, Mr. Huynh Quang Hung emphasized the need to promote the combined strength of the entire political system and the people in drug prevention. Strengthen propaganda, education on the responsibility of drug prevention, raise awareness about the harms of drugs, and intensify efforts to combat and prevent drug-related crimes in the community.
