Urgent solutions
Recently, the situation of domestic waste stagnating at landfills is posing environmental challenges in Can Tho City. In that situation, the city is urgently seeking and implementing waste treatment solutions in an effective and sustainable manner.

According to the proposal of the Department of Agriculture and Environment (formerly the Department of Natural Resources and Environment), there are 4 options proposed to treat waste remaining in existing landfills.
This includes on-site treatment by installing machinery and treatment plants; transferring to treatment at EB Environmental Energy Company Limited (Can Tho) and Minh Thong Trading Service Company Limited - units that are treating waste in the city; investing in solid waste treatment project No. 2 at Thoi Lai District solid waste treatment area; unloading and transporting waste out of the city for treatment.

After carefully analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of each option, the Department proposed that the City People's Committee consider and agree to choose a waste collection and transportation option outside the city for treatment.
This option is considered feasible, helping to solve environmental problems, quickly clear the land, create a clean land fund to invite investors at the O Mon District solid waste treatment area and at landfill No. 8 (Cai Rang District) and treat waste remaining at these 2 landfills.
Long-term planning and solutions
In addition to treating backlog of waste, the city also focuses on long-term solutions. According to the approved plan, the solid waste treatment area in Thoi Lai district will be invested in to increase waste treatment capacity, about 750 tons/day and night in 2020 and about 1,000 tons/day and night in 2030.

The Department of Agriculture and Environment also recommended that the City People's Committee continue to direct the People's Committee of Thoi Lai district to prepare a dossier to propose an investment policy for the solid waste treatment project (residential waste) No. 2 Can Tho at the solid waste treatment area of Thoi Lai district, Can Tho city. At the same time, the Department of Planning and Investment was assigned to preside over and coordinate with relevant units to advise on investment policies and bidding to select investors to implement the project.
In response to the above proposals, the Chairman of the City People's Committee assigned the Department of Agriculture and Environment to preside over and coordinate with relevant units, present more in detail and specifically the proposed content of waste treatment plans at old landfills in the city and the selected plan is highly feasible.
The city leaders also requested to urgently advise the City People's Committee to consider and speed up the progress of waste treatment at old landfills in the city in accordance with current legal regulations in March 2025; at the same time, strengthen management, develop detailed plans on management and treatment of domestic solid waste throughout the city; ensure proactiveness and flexibility.
Previously, the People's Committee of Can Tho City issued a Decision on promulgating Regulations on the management of domestic solid waste; plastic waste; routes and transportation times for domestic waste, common industrial solid waste, and hazardous waste. This Decision takes effect from January 6, 2025.
