VinFuture 2024 will “dissect” air pollution

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), up to 7 million people die each year from air pollution and the risk is likely to increase in the future. In addition to the seminars on the topics: “Materials for a sustainable future”, “AI implementation in practice” and “Innovations in Cardiovascular Health Care and Stroke Treatment”, the seminar “Air Pollution and Traffic: Opportunities and Challenges for Vietnam and the World” is one of the important contents that scientists are interested in at VinFuture Science and Technology Week 2024.

According to Professor Susan Solomon from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, USA), who has been honored with a series of prestigious awards, most recently the VinFuture Special Prize for Women Scientists 2023, and is also the chair of the discussion session, this is a valuable opportunity for experts from Vietnam and internationally to exchange ideas. According to Professor Susan Solomon, just looking at the transportation system in Hanoi, we can see that finding feasible solutions is urgent.

Professor Daniel Kammen from the University of California, Berkeley, believes that advances in vehicle electrification have the potential to improve urban air quality. Projects to convert taxi fleets to electric vehicles have been successfully implemented in many cities, including some that have converted almost completely. This success not only proves the feasibility of converting to electric vehicles on a large scale, but also opens up the prospect of applying a similar model in other cities, including in Vietnam.
