Speaking with Lao Dong Newspaper on the morning of September 12, Mr. Tran Chien - Chairman of the People's Committee of Cam Thanh commune (Hoi An, Quang Nam) said that the commune has decided to stop all entertainment, cultural and sports activities in the series of activities to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Cam Thanh Uprising Day, to share with the flood-affected people in the North.
The Dong Khoi and Liberation of Cam Thanh (September 27, 1964) was a major historical event of the locality, opening the wave of "Dong Khoi" as strong as a rising tide in many other suburban communes of Hoi An. Therefore, on the 60th anniversary of this event, Cam Thanh commune has a plan to organize a series of mass cultural and sports events, a camp for the whole people with many entertainment activities lasting 3 days and nights from September 26 to 29.
But now that floods have swept through the northern provinces, causing heavy losses in lives and property, the Cam Thanh government has decided to stop supporting activities and only hold commemorative ceremonies. The costs of competitions, art performances, camping, etc. and contributions from party members will be transferred to support the disaster-stricken people in the north.
This is a specific and practical sharing action of the government and people of Cam Thanh commune, Hoi An, and people across the country towards the provinces affected by natural disasters and floods.
"When one horse is in pain, the whole stable will stop eating grass", let alone the storms and floods that are causing grief to so many families and rural areas. In the future, when the flood recedes, the pain will increase. The number of casualties, property damage, and technical infrastructure damage in localities will increase.
The immediate needs for rescue work may be life jackets, rubber boats, dry food, first aid medicine... to help people survive the flood. However, the budget and contributions from the people of the whole country are the important sources for long-term allocation and relief in the next few months.
Because when the water receded, the mounting difficulties became apparent. The fields were devastated, the rice granaries, the vegetable fields, the flower villages serving Tet... were damaged by the floods on the river banks, causing crop failure. Herds of livestock and poultry were swept away in the flood, all their capital was swept away, but they left behind debts.
Bridges, roads, schools destroyed and damaged by storms and floods everywhere... will require a large amount of resources that the local budget cannot afford to fix in a short time. Therefore, a day's salary contribution from a worker following the donation campaign launched by the Trade Union, or a student or teacher skipping a few breakfasts to support the people affected by natural disasters in the North... are also very valuable at this time.
Entertainment and enjoying art at this time is not appropriate in the context of many people still buried in landslides, many muddy bodies on bamboo hammocks, hundreds of others still missing... People and soldiers in many places have to work day and night to help people avoid floods and overcome natural disasters.
The suspension of cultural, artistic and entertainment activities of Cam Thanh commune and the collection of small budget coins to help people affected by natural disasters and floods is a very timely action.
