Injuries at times of stress
Striker Nguyen Xuan Son had to leave the field due to a serious injury in the 32nd minute of the second leg of the 2024 ASEAN Cup final between Vietnam and Thailand. Xuan Son was immediately taken to the hospital by ambulance, with staff from the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) following closely to provide support.
After discussing with doctors, VFF decided to bring striker Xuan Son back to the country for surgery and treatment at the Orthopedic Trauma & Sports Medicine Center, Vinmec International General Hospital.
The surgery was full of pressure but affirmed the position of Vietnamese doctors
The person who directly performed surgery on this striker was Professor, Doctor Tran Trung Dung - one of the leading orthopedic surgeons in the region.
“A player like Xuan Son is not only a patient, but also a symbol of passion and effort. I understand that behind this surgery is not only a person’s health, but also his dream and aspiration and that of his family,” Dr. Dung shared before the surgery.
Dr. Dung said that although he had made a detailed plan and comprehensively analyzed Xuan Son's injury, he always maintained the utmost caution. "Just one small mistake could affect Son's career," he added.
After many stressful hours, the surgery ended successfully. The feeling of relief was evident on Dr. Dung's face, but he still emphasized: "This is just the beginning. The next phase of recovery and training will be a big challenge for Son."
Dr. Dung added: “In Xuan Son’s case, we look at it from two perspectives. Most people are concerned about Xuan Son’s injuries and his ability to recover... For me and my team, from a professional perspective, we have had the opportunity to treat Son.”
Assessing the health status of striker Xuan Son, Professor, Doctor Tran Trung Dung shared: “The opportunity for Xuan Son to return to top sports is completely possible. In terms of surgical techniques, there is nothing too complicated. However, surgery only accounts for 10% of the process, while 90% of recovery depends on the work behind it.”
Dr. Dung was also proud when Xuan Son had surgery at the hospital. Immediately after Son was injured, the doctors consulted until 1am on January 6 and at 5am they decided to return home. When the decision was made, Vinmec International General Hospital immediately prepared the best things such as an ambulance and worked with security to get the car to the foot of the plane's stairs.
After the surgery, Dr. Dung shared: With this surgery, we see that it is the trust of patients, especially those with financial conditions, to put their trust in Vietnamese healthcare. Through the case of player Xuan Son, it can be seen that financially well-off patients in general, and athletes in particular, have the opportunity to choose surgery and treatment in countries with developed healthcare, but in the end, they still choose Vietnamese healthcare.
