Showering every day is often not dangerous to health. However, a surprise happened to the man in England. He suffered a serious eye infection that led to blindness in one eye after bathing.
The cause of this incident was determined to be that a man named Nick Humphreys in Shropshire, England, 29 years old often did not remove contact lenses while bathing.
According to PA Media, Humphreys was unaware that this habit could increase the risk of eye infections. In 2018, he suffered from corneal inflammation caused by Acanthamoeba - a rare parasitic infection of the cornea.
"If I knew how dangerous it was to wear contact lenses while swimming, I would never do it," Humphreys told PA Media.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people wearing contact lenses face the risk of getting the disease if they do not disinfect contact lenses properly or swim or bathe while wearing them.
Humphreys often dance while bathing in contact lenses after a morning exercise.
Humphreys said: "I was never advised not to wear contact lenses when bathing. There are no warnings on the packaging and my ophthalmologists never mention the risks."
After he was diagnosed with coronary artery inflammation in early 2018, the man was given medicine but a few months later, he suddenly lost his right eye.
Despite being treated with many methods, Humphreys' eyes showed no signs of improvement. He is expected to undergo a cornea transplant in August. This transplant will replace damaged cornea tissue with healthy cornea tissue from a deceased donor.
Humphreys is currently working with the charity Fight for Vision to raise awareness of the risks of bathing or swimming with contact lenses.
Its important to let people out there know that this is a reality and you can take a risk when wearing contact lenses for something as simple as bathing, Humphreys says.
