On November 12, the Department of Medical Affairs - Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health said that as of 12:00 on the same day, hospitals had received 316 cases of digestive disorders after eating bread at the system of Ms. Bich's toad bread shop.
Of which, 252 cases have been discharged from the hospital, while 64 cases are being treated at hospitals, with stable health.
In particular, a severe case is being actively treated for resuscitation at Gia Dinh People's Hospital, the main cause is underlying diseases (lyngitis, high blood pressure, hives). This morning, this patient turned off the ventilator, removed the endotracheal tube, and continued to breathe oxygen through his nose.
Initial test results showed that there were culprits such as Salmonella enteritidis and Salmonella spp, from blood culture and fecal culture. The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health has directed hospitals and the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control to continue to coordinate with the University of Oxford Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) to collect product samples, conduct cross-plant testing and explain the genetic sequences of isolated strains to clarify the cause and factors related to this cluster of food poisoning cases.
Previously, a blood culture test result positive for Staphylococcus coagulase-negative on a patient with food poisoning caused misunderstanding that this was the cause of food poisoning.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health affirmed that Staphylococcus coagulase-negative is a group of bacteria that is always present on the skin and mucous membranes of healthy people and often does not cause disease, does not produce intestinal toxins, does not cause food poisoning and is not related to disease-causing foods. The discovery of Staphylococcus coagulase-negative in blood culture was largely due to "infection" - that is, bacteria from the skin that follow the sample during blood collection.
Food poisoning often occurs from eating foods contaminated with microorganisms or causing digestive infections, such as Staphylococcus aureus (positive coagulase golden sphere, potentially producing intestinal toxins), Salmonella sp, Shigella sp, E. coli, Clostridium perfringens, Bacillus cereus... Determining the cause of food poisoning should be based on sufficient evidence including test results of food samples, feces or vomiting samples; timing of symptoms, disease progression and epidemiological analysis between cases.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health recommends that people should not panic or speculate from a single test result. However, each person needs to proactively protect their health by choosing foods of clear origin, eating them cooked and boiled, preserving them properly and following food safety and hygiene principles to prevent poisoning.
As reported by Lao Dong Newspaper, Ms. Bich's toad shop has a main store on Nguyen Thai Son Street (Hanh Thong Ward) and a branch 2 on Le Quang Dinh Street (Binh Loi Trung Ward). After eating, these people showed symptoms of abdominal pain, diarrhea, high fever and were taken to hospitals for treatment.
The authorities have established an inspection team, sealed the food, took bread samples and ingredients for testing.
