8 years after Gaddafi's time, Libya is on the brink of a bloody civil war

Since the overthrow and assassination of the late President Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has once again been on the brink of political and military crisis, with 21 people killed in clashes between factions near the capital Tripoli.

"Based on information from the central operating office of the Ministry of Health, the number of casualties in the clashes near the capital Tripoli was 21 dead and 27 injured" - the new commune's flower quoted a statement from the Libya Health Ministry.

The two main factions currently in power in Libya are the GNA government of Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarraj recognized by the United Nations and the second government in the East elected by the Libya National Assembly and supported by the Libya National Army (LNA) led by General Khalifa Haftar.

On April 4, 2019, General Haftar ordered soldiers to launch a major offensive to occupy West Libya, especially Tripoli, where Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarraj's GNA government is located.

On April 7, the LNA launched airstrikes against UN-backed forces south of Tripoli.

On the same day, April 7, a spokesperson for the GNA government announced the launch of a military campaign against the LNA army - which is in alliance with the government in the East. GNA spokesman Mohammed Qanouno said the "Fury Fire" military campaign aims to "clear all cities in Libya from those outside the law."

The US military has withdrawn from Libya amid rising violence in the capital Tripoli.

"The security situation in Libya is increasingly complex and unpredictable," CNN quoted General Thomas Waldhauser, head of the US African Command, as saying.

US forces - which provide military assistance to diplomatic missions, counterterrorism and regional security - have been temporarily relocated to deal with "increased instability".

Libya has struggled to make a democratic transition amid uncertainty and chaos since the government of the late President Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown in 2011.

During these 8 years, General Haftar emerged as one of the few prominent figures who took advantage of the collapse of the Gaddafi government. General Haftar controls much of eastern Libya, but his main goal is to capture Tripoli.
