The new Louvre Abu Dhabi Museum opened in the capital Abu Dhabi of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) under a 30-year contract between the Abu Dhabi government and the French government that will display a 500-year-old painting by Leonardo da Vinci.
The work " Salvator Mundi" or "The Savior" was sold by Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev at Christie's auction house. The painting was sold for $450 million, double the $127.5 million that Dmitry Rybovlev spent in 2013 to own the painting.
This is the highest price ever paid for a work of art at auctions, beating the record price of Willem de Kooning's painting " Interchange" sold for $303 million in 2015.
However, the painting has just set a new record that caused great controversy because some artists thought that Leonardo da Vinci was not the author.
The buyer's identity according to the New York Times is Saudi Arabian Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Farhan al-Saud, a close friend of Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
