The fire broke out right in the peak tourist season, when nightclubs were packed with customers and operated all night.
State authorities in Goa confirmed that at least 23 people were killed in a major fire at a notorious nightclub in Arpora, a bustling tourist area located on the southwest coast of India. The incident caused the entire bustling area to suddenly sink into chaos.
State Governor Goa Pramod Sawant said he inspected the scene that night and called for a full investigation.
Those responsible will face the harshest punishment. Any violations will be handled uncompromisingly, he affirmed on social network X.
Speaking at the scene, Mr. Sawant said that of the 23 victims, there were 3-4 tourists, the rest were club staff.
The authorities determined that 3 people died from severe burns, while 20 others died from smoke inhalation - a sign that the fire spread very quickly and toxic gas accumulated strongly in the closed space.
According to Indian media, police believe most of the dead were trapped before they could find a way out.
Initial information from the investigation agency said that the fire may have originated from a gas tank explosion in the kitchen area, according to PTI news agency, citing the local police chief.
The fire broke out suddenly and spread in just a few minutes, making the evacuation work extremely difficult.
Firefighters and emergency rescue forces took many hours to control the fire, while relatives of the victims and tourists panicked and gathered around the blocked area.
Goa - the smallest state but one of the most visited destinations in India - is famous for its long beaches, tropical climate and vibrant nightlife. Every winter, millions of tourists flock here to enjoy the sea and extended night parties.
Therefore, the fire that occurred during the peak tourist season made the damage even more serious, when entertainment establishments operated at the highest capacity.
Currently, Goa authorities are reviewing all entertainment establishments in the area to prevent similar risks. Meanwhile, the work of verifying the victim's identity and supporting their family is still being urgently carried out.
