On January 1st, North Korean President Kim Jong-un attended New Year's celebrations in Pyongyang with fireworks displays, patriotic songs, dances and taekwondo performances, according to the state news agency KCNA.
Kim Jong-un's daughter Ju Ae accompanied him throughout the event. Images released by KCNA show Ju Ae hugging young children with her father, sitting next to and holding hands with Kim Jong-un in a festive atmosphere. Some analysts consider Ju Ae to be the top candidate to succeed Kim Jong-un.
In his speech, Kim Jong-un praised the efforts of the North Korean people for bringing "phenomenal successes and changes" in 2025 and called for strengthening solidarity.
North Korea is expected to hold the 9th Congress of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea in early 2026, setting out a development plan for the next 5 years in many fields, including nuclear, weapons and economic development.
Also according to KCNA, Mr. Kim Jong-un sent a New Year message to North Korean soldiers fighting in the conflict in Ukraine. He called them "the greatest strength, pride and solid pillar" of the country, and expressed his wish for a reunion when they return to their homeland. The message was quoted with the message: "Be brave. Behind you are Pyongyang and Moscow".
KCNA also reported that Mr. Kim Jong-un received New Year greetings from many heads of state, including the General Secretary, President of China and his wife.
