RT reported that the suicide bombing in the capital of Afghanistan Kabul on September 5 killed 25 people, including two staff members of the Russian Embassy.
The self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the bombing, which occurred not far from the entrance to the Russian Embassy in the capital Afghanistan.
The terrorist group said the attack was carried out by a foreign fighter. According to some reports, the attack was carried out by a fighter from a branch of the local Islamic State organization, ISIS-K.
This is the first attack on a diplomatic agency in Afghanistan claimed by IS since the Taliban took over in 2021. The Russian Investigative Committee had earlier confirmed that an assistant secretary and a security guard - both Russian - were killed in the blast.
According to media reports, most of the victims were Afghanistanese lining up to apply for visas. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that security at the mission had been enhanced after the attack.
Russia is one of the few countries to maintain a diplomatic mission in Kabul since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan a year ago.
Afghanistan has seen multiple terrorist attacks since the Taliban took over in 2021. The Taliban blamed the attacks on ISIS-K. In mid-August, a massive blast at a mosque in Kabul during evening prayers killed dozens.
