According to Daily Mail, on the occasion of World Ocean Day on June 8, the US National Geophysical Association declared the waters around the South China Sea the 5th ocean on the planet. This region is called the South Ocean
Previously, the National Geophysical Association classified the waters around the South pole as an extension of the cold southern Atlantic, Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean, even as scientists and the press increasingly used the term "Southern Ocean".
"The southern ocean has long been recognized by scientists," said Alex Tait, a geologist at the National Geophysical Association. But because there has never been an international agreement, we have never officially recognized it."
The US Council on Geographical Names has recognized the South Ocean since 1999, while the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration only recognized it in February this year.
The National Geophysical Association's decision to recognize the South Atlantic comes from the recognition of the unique ocean flow that covers the South pole. They also studied the unique marine ecosystem found in the cold waters of the South Atlantic.
While the issue remains controversial, the National Geography Association hopes its revised map will help people think differently about the South Atlantic, thereby encouraging its conservation.
