On the occasion of the 5th anniversary of full operation on November 1, the Three Gorges Project affirmed its role as a multi-functional pillar in the management of the Yangtze River, bringing comprehensive benefits in flood control, power generation, water supply and water transportation.
Over the past 5 years, the project has blocked more than 29 billion m3 of floodwater through coordination with reservoirs in upstream, contributing significantly to minimizing the risk of flooding in the central and downstream areas.
As the main clean energy center, the Three Gorges Hydropower Plant has produced more than 423 billion kWh of electricity, equivalent to saving 128 million tons of standard coal and reducing emissions of 347 million tons of CO2.
The Three Gorges Dam also ensures water supply for downstream areas during the dry season, with a total additional water volume of 82.4 billion m3, meeting industrial, daily and ecological needs.
Transportation efficiency continues to improve, with the volume of goods passing through the system of wharves at Tam Hiep dam exceeding 700 million tons in the past 5 years. Annual transport output alone has exceeded 150 million tons for 3 consecutive years, reaching a record of 168 million tons in 2023. The train elevator system, which acts as a rapid traffic corridor, has transported more than 1.7 million passengers and 15 million tons of goods.
Since the groundbreaking in 1994, the Three Gorges project has developed into a comprehensive hydrological control system, including a 2,309m long, 185m high hydroelectric dam, 2 5-storey boat dock routes and 34 turbine generators with a total capacity of 22.5 million kW.
