A major impact winter storm, nor'easter, is forecast to cause a snowstorm to the northeastern United States from February 22, with snow accumulation possibly exceeding 30cm.
Snowstorm warnings are effective from the morning of February 22, including New York and the coastal area of New Jersey.
Winter storm warnings and monitoring have also been issued in Boston, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and Baltimore.
Forecast snowfall continues to increase, making the storm in formation one of the biggest threats of snowstorms in many years for major cities in the northeastern United States such as New York.
Afternoon 22. 2
It is forecasted that by the afternoon of February 22, the storm will begin to form clearly as a low pressure area moves out of North Carolina and strengthens rapidly.
Rain/snowfall will concentrate densely in the central Atlantic region. Circulation around the low pressure area will draw cold air towards the coast, quickly turning rain into snow.
Snow will begin to spread to the northeast in cities such as New York, Washington and Philadelphia in the early afternoon.
By late afternoon, the offshore storm will strengthen significantly as the central pressure drops rapidly.
The storm will enter the bombogenesis phase, meaning the pressure will decrease by more than 24 millibars within 24 hours, causing this weather system to explode in intensity.
Night 22. 2
The thickest snowfall in the northeast will start from the night of February 22. Areas deeper inland are likely to record less snowfall, as the storm's path is very close to the east coast.
In New York, heavy snow with gusts over 80 km/h will create snowstorm conditions. It is forecasted that travel conditions will be very dangerous.
Coastal communities in Massachusetts may face coastal flooding from the night of February 22nd to the morning of February 23rd.
Morning of February 23
The forecast situation is chaotic in New England as typical nor'easter weather conditions appear with heavy snow and strong winds.
Snowstorm conditions are highly likely to occur in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Although it is not certain whether Boston will reach the official snowstorm threshold or not, this possibility still exists and people need to be prepared.
Strong winds can cause widespread power outages, with gusts of up to 113 km/h.
Afternoon of February 23
Snow will stop in New York and western areas. However, in Long Island and northern areas of New York extending to Maine, snow may continue to fall until evening. The risk of coastal erosion and flooding is still a concern throughout the day of February 23.
24th of February
By the morning of February 24, snow and winter storms will stop affecting the weather throughout the region.
