Bloomberg reported that Elon Musk has officially stepped back from President Donald Trump's role as a government advisor after criticizing the "big, beautiful law" - the focus of Trump's legislative agenda - as "a public spending disaster".
The information was posted by Elon Musk himself on social network X on May 28: My time working in the government as a Special Government employee has ended. I thank President @real Donald Trump for the opportunity to help reduce budget waste. DOGE's mission will become stronger over time, as it becomes a lifestyle in the entire government."
DOGE here is not money, but an acronym for the Department of Government Efficiency - the spending reform agency founded and run by Elon Musk during his time working with the government.
A White House official confirmed that Mr. Musk will leave.
Elon Musk's decision to leave comes just a day after he publicly criticized President Trump's "big, beautiful law" in an interview with CBS.
I think a bill can be big, or it can be beautiful. But I don't think it can be both, Elon Musk said, stressing that the bill increases public spending, loosens budget discipline and undermine DOGEs efforts.
The bill has been criticized for including tax cuts and tightening immigration control, but increasing the federal deficit to $3.8 trillion over the course of 10 years, according to a preliminary estimate from the US Congressional budget Office (CBO).
Elon Musk is not alone. Many Republicans have also expressed concern about the huge spending bill. President Mike Lee (Utah) affirmed: The Senate bill must be stronger. That must be the case, otherwise it will not be approved.
Meanwhile, Speaker Mike Johnson thanked Elon Musk for his contributions to DOGE and pledged to continue the spirit of bage straps.
When he began his work in the administration, Musk expected DOGE to help cut spending by up to $1 trillion. But he admitted in an interview with the Washington Post: The federal administration is much worse than I thought... Reform in D.C. is a steep war.
Elon Musk will now focus back on Tesla, SpaceX and reduce his participation in political activities. Although he once declared "very much in love" with President Trump, he admitted: "I think I have done enough."
