A British woman in her 60s collided with a high-speed boat fan on August 31 while swimming off the coast of Corfu, Greece, resulting in her death and body being spotted by tourists. The witness said the victim suffered "serious injuries to the lower limbs" in the coastal accident of Avlaki.
There are many speedboats in the area and police are investigating the tragic death of the woman. Preliminary reports show that the high-speed boat driver did not detect the victim and could not avoid the collision.
The woman's body has been taken to Corfu General Hospital and is scheduled for an autopsy on September 1, I-Efimerida informed. The name of the British woman has not been revealed and it is unclear whether she was swimming alone or with others when the accident occurred.
British tourists have returned to Greece in recent weeks after travel restrictions were lifted. Greece is one of the countries in the "travel corridor", where tourists can go without a 2-week quarantine when they return to the UK.
However, the increase in COVID-19 cases in recent weeks has raised the incidence rate to nearly 20/100,000. Nearly 1,500 new cases reported in the past 7 days have raised the total number of cases in Greece to 10,317, of which 266 have died.
Greece aims to boost tourism to revive its struggling economy, which has damaged a quarter of its economy as a result of the recession.
New local restrictions have been imposed at hot spots such as Mykonos to limit the spread of the virus, including a midnight curfew on bars, restaurants, cafes and a ban on large gatherings.
