Israel attacks Iranian nuclear and military sites

Thanh Hà |

Israel attacked the Iranian capital early on the morning of June 13, with explosions echoing throughout Tehran.

Iran's state broadcaster confirmed the explosions. Smoke rises from Chitgar, a neighborhood in western Tehran.

An Israeli military official revealed that Israel is targeting Iran's nuclear sites, but did not specify which sites they are. The ongoing operation also targeted Iranian military sites.

The attack comes amid tensions that have reached the peak of Tehran's rapidly developing nuclear program. On June 12, for the first time in 20 years, the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency criticized Iran for not working with inspectors of the organization.

Iran immediately announced that it would establish a third uranium enrichment location in the country and exchange some of its centrify into more advanced ones.

For many years, Israel has warned against allowing Iran to produce nuclear weapons.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed that the country carried out the June 13 attack on Iran, but did not specify the target.

"After the Israeli preventionist attack on Iran, missile and drone strikes on Israel and its civilians are expected to take place immediately," he said.

The statement said Defense Minister Katz "has signed a special order declaring a domestic emergency."

Israel has begun carrying out strikes on Iran, two US officials confirmed. The unnamed officials also confirmed that there was no US support or involvement in the operation.
