Heavy rain in Chongqing (China): 1 dead, 17 unidentified

Thanh Hà |

1 dead, 17 unidentified after heavy rain in Chongqing, southwest China.

Heavy rain poured down on Yongchuan County in Chongqing City, southwest China, starting from the evening of May 23 and lasting until the morning of May 24.

According to the headquarters for flood prevention and control and rescue, Tra Son - Truc Hai sub-zone recorded the highest rainfall reaching 296.6mm in the period from 2 am to 4 am on May 24, with the highest hourly rain intensity reaching 103.6 mm/h.

Chinese meteorologists said that due to the short distance between the current heavy rain and the previous rain, prolonged continuous rain increases the risk of geological disasters such as landslides, subsidence and mudslides. Currently, functional forces are urgently deploying rescue and response operations.

Chongqing City activated a level III emergency response level for a geological disaster in Yongchuan district at 7 am on May 24.

Previously, on May 23, China's National Headquarters for Flood Control and Drought Relief activated a level IV emergency response level for flood prevention and control in Hubei province and Chongqing city, while maintaining a similar response level for Hunan province, the Ministry of Emergency Management of China (MEM) informed.

China applies a four-level emergency response system, of which level I is the most serious level. A working group has been sent to Hubei province in central China to support and guide flood prevention and control.

On the same day, this command agency and the Ministry of Emergency Management coordinated to organize consultations with agencies such as meteorology, water resources, natural resources, and key provincial-level localities including Hubei, Chongqing and Shaanxi to assess the latest developments of the heavy rain expected to last from May 23 to 27, and at the same time deploy flood prevention measures in key areas.

In the context of China entering the flood season, in recent days, heavy rain has poured down on many areas in the south and central regions of this country.
