Mykhailo Podolyak, a senior adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said the Russian military is planning mass infantry attacks similar to the tactics used by the Soviet Union during World War II.
According to the New York Times, this comment was made in the context of leading Ukrainian military and political leaders warning that Russia is focusing on troops and weapons to conduct a new ground offensive in the spring, which will likely include a second attempt to capture Ukraine's capital Kiev.
Ukrainian officials said that comments about Russia's move were based on findings from the Ukrainian military and foreign intelligence forces, as well as consultations with its allies.
Mr. Podolyak noted that Ukraine is seriously considering the risk of Russia launching a new attack and stressed that Ukraine's allies should also understand this. He suggested that as Western governments plan to transfer weapons to Ukraine, it is important to pay attention to the equipment being suitable for future threats.
In parallel with the fighting along the front line, Russia has bombed infrastructure targets across the country, leading to power, water shortages and heating systems for millions of Ukrainians.
