The Russian Defense Ministry on April 17, 2025 announced the upgrade of the Tosochka "Tosochka" heavy heat jet system through the use of 220 mm new TBS-3M bullets. With this type of bullet, the maximum range of TOS-2 is raised from 12 km to 15 km, bringing significant tactical advantages without changing the structure of the launcher.
According to Army recognition, the new TBS-3M rocket has achieved a wide range thanks to the use of a launcher with higher pulse and a slightly lighter heat- Pressure warhead. These improvements allow shells to fly further while still retaining their characteristic destructive effects.
The supercharger works by spraying fuel - air, then detonating, creating an explosion with temperatures that can exceed 2,000 degrees Celsius and strong shock waves. The blast will burn everything in the mothers' range and drain oxygen, causing serious injuries even to soldiers hiding in the shelter.
Especially effective in narrow spaces such as underground tunnels, battlefields and urban areas, termiconductor weapons are often used in large-scale suppression missions, breaking down boong-ke and destroying hidden infantry. A series of 18 shells from the TOS-2 system can cover an area of up to 6 hectares, destroying all enemy life and light fighting in the blasting area.
TOS-2 is designed on the Ural-63706-0120 6x6 tire chassis, providing higher mobility compared to previous versions such as TOS-1A using chain wheels. Thanks to that, the system can operate on many types of terrain without the need for specialized transport vehicles, improving flexibility in tactical deployment.
In terms of technology, TOS-2 integrates a fully automatic firepower control system, including heat-ops, bulletline computers and laser remote measurement equipment. These equipment allow combat teams to identify and attack targets accurately in many different environmental conditions. For the first time, the Russian Ministry of Defense released images inside the TOS-2 car, showing a modern digital command room and a reasonable operating position design, supporting quick and efficient response in combat.
The TOS-2 system has been deployed in combat for the first time in the conflict with Ukraine. Here, fireworks were used to attack solid and urban defense positions controlled by Ukrainian forces, clearly demonstrating their ability to attack quickly and destroy a large area. The use of TBS-3M ammunition makes TOS-2 a more flexible and harmful destruction tool in Russia's modern artillery arsenal.
