Russia "opens up" about Sukhoi's brand new fighter jet

Russia will introduce a potential new Sukhoi fighter jet at the MAKS-2021 International Aerospace Exhibition opening next week.

AP reported that the newly wrapped Russian plane was towed to a landing place at an airport in Zhukovsky, a suburb of Moscow, where the MAKS-2021 International Aerospace Exhibition will take place on July 20.

Russian press said that the new type of fighter jet was built by Sukhoi in the light fighter development program.

Unlike Russia's latest two- engines Su-57 stealth fighter, the new one is smaller and has one engine.

The Su-57 was built to suit the US F-22 Raptor stealth fighter, but unlike the US fighter that has been equipped since 2005, the mass production of the Su-57 has only just begun. Russia is also developing a new engine that will provide hypersonic speeds for the Su-57.

The name of the new fighter jet is currently unknown and there is no information about its capability and deployment prospects.

The potential Russian fighter seems to be competing with the US F-35 Lightning II fighter jet - which was put into service in 2015. Russia hopes to eventually provide a new type of aircraft to foreign customers.

Rostec - a state-owned corporation consisting of Russian aircraft manufacturers - said the new military aircraft will be announced on July 20 at the 2021 International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition. Russia is one of the few countries in the world that has the capacity to produce advanced aircraft systems, and is also a leader in the manufacture of recognized fighter jets.

After Rostec's announcement, Russian plane watchers flocked to Zhukovsky to take photos of the new plane.

In an effort to attract public attention before the introduction, Rostec posted on Twitter a photo of the newly covered plane with the words "Do you want to see me naked?". Rostec also posted a short video with overseas customers excited and shady of the water- surface rocket.

Another photo posted on Rostec's Facebook account on July 17 shows what appears to be a reflection of a British Type 45 destroy ship in the optical sensor of a new Russian fighter jet with the words "See you again". Rostec wrote: "Black tarpaulins look attractive, but the details are always more interesting."

"We believe that the new product will arouse real interest not only in our country but also in other regions of the world, including our competitors abroad," said a Rostec representative in a press release.

Famous Russian military expert Alexei Leonkov told Sputnik that, based on the image, Rostec's "all-new" military aircraft is a fifth-generation light- engine fighter developed by the Sukhoi Design Department.

Another prominent expert in the aviation sector, Oleg Panteleev, also believes that the basically new military aircraft will be a fifth-generation light tactical fighter. He said the plane would have a high combat payload and advanced Russian weapons. According to experts, the wing edge shows the use of stealth technologies.

This year, MAKS-2021 will celebrate its 15th anniversary. The exhibition will take place from July 20-25 in Zhukovsky, matskskova region. All events within the framework of MAKS-2021 will be organized in strict compliance with epidemic requirements in the context of COVID-19.

Traditionally, Russian President Vladimir Putin will watch the flights perform at MAKS-2021.

"I don't know exactly about the show at the moment, but perhaps, according to tradition, the president will see the flights perform. I think this time will be the same," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said when asked whether Putin would see the new military aircraft displayed at the MAKS-2021.
