The British Defense Ministry intelligence said Russia is promoting a program to build shelters to protect aircraft at some airports near the border with Ukraine. The move is seen as a response to Ukrainian drone attacks amid the prolonged conflict.
According to the latest update, safe havens are being deployed at Millerovo, Kursk Vostochny and Hvardiiske air bases. These are all locations near the common border with Ukraine, playing a strategic role in the operations of the Russian air force. These tunnels are designed with reinforced arched roofs, thick anti- explosion doors and covered with soil outside to increase the ability to withstand attacks.
The Millerovo base, about 17km east of the Russia-Ukraine border, has been the target of attacks from Ukraine. There are currently 8 new aircraft storage tunnels here that are in the process of completion and can soon be put into operation. British intelligence said the mines would add an important protective layer to aircraft stationed in the area.
Observers say the increased construction activities at the airports reflect the Russian military's efforts to improve its defense capabilities, especially after Russia reportedly lost 41 strategic aircraft in the " spider web" operation carried out by Kiev on June 1.
According to data from the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, since the conflict broke out in February 2022, Ukraine has destroyed 414 Russian fighter jets and 337 helicopters. These damages are believed to have prompted Russia to strengthen measures to protect military assets in the air.
