Ukrainian citizen Serhij K, who was not fully named due to German privacy laws, was arrested by a judge at the German Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe, a representative of the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office informed on November 28.
Serhij K, 49, was arrested at the end of August while on vacation with his family in Italy. The Nord Stream suspect has fought against extradition through legal channels and has also been exonerated by the accused of inappropriate treatment.
Last week, the Italian Supreme Court gave the green light for the extradition of the suspect to Germany. Serhij K was handed over to the German authorities on November 27.
German prosecutors accused the man of being an accomplice in the 2022 explosions of the Russian gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea. Serhij K was one of the coordinators of the sabotage attack, prosecutors said. The suspect denied the allegations.
The attack on the German-Russian gas pipeline caused a stir in public opinion around the world in the fall of 2022. Several explosions near the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea damaged three of the four branches of the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines.
According to German investigators, the group of 7 suspects for sabotage Nord Stream includes 4 divers. Another Nord Stream suspect has also been arrested in Poland. However, judges in Poland rejected Germany's extradition request and the suspect was released.
