Nearly half of the Germans surveyed will support boycotting the 2026 FIFA World Cup if the US annexes Greenland by force, according to a survey conducted by the INSA Institute of Sociology at the request of Bild newspaper.
The 2026 World Cup will be held in the US, Mexico and Canada from June 11 to July 19.
According to the poll, 47% of respondents answered "yes" to the question of whether Germany should boycott the 2026 World Cup in the event that the US annexed Greenland.
35% of respondents opposed the boycott, while another 18% could not give an answer.
The survey was conducted on January 15-16 with 1,002 participants.
Previously, foreign policy expert of the Christian Democratic Union Jurgen Hardt said that boycotting the World Cup should be considered as the last resort to force US President Donald Trump to rethink the Greenland issue.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly declared the annexation of Greenland to the US. Even during his first US presidential term, he proposed buying back Denmark's autonomous island. In March 2025, he expressed his belief that the island could be annexed to the US.
Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark. In addition to alliance commitments with NATO, in 1951, Washington and Copenhagen signed the Greenland Defense Treaty, under which the US pledged to protect the island from potential attacks.
