The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize to Belarus human rights activist Ales Bialiatski, human rights organization Russia Memorial and human rights organization Ukraine Center for Civil Liberties.
According to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, the 2022 Nobel Prize laureate represents civil society in countries. These individuals and organizations have long promoted the right to criticize power and protect the basic rights of the people.
These individuals and organizations have made outstanding efforts to record war crimes, human rights violations and abuse of power. Together they proved the importance of civil society for peace and democracy.
The Nobel Peace Prize has previously attracted attention when it awarded to groups and activists who are working to prevent conflicts, alleviate hardship and protect human rights.
Last year, Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov and Philippine Maria Ressa were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to protect freedom of speech, which is a prerequisite for democracy and long-term peace.
During the 2022 Nobel Prize season, the Nobel Prize in Physics, Chemistry, and Literature were announced from October 3. The 2022 Nobel Prize in Economics will be announced on October 10.
The Nobel Prize includes a cash prize worth 10 million Swedish kronor (nearly 900,000 USD) and will be awarded on December 10.
