Two people were injured in a shooting that occurred near the White House, law enforcement sources revealed. Two injured people include a suspect and one possibly a passerby. Both have been taken to a hospital in the area for treatment.
Sources said that the suspect is in critical condition, while the other person is seriously injured.
Sources say that it seems that US Secret Service agents were shot but missed, after which the force fired back. About 15 to 30 shots were fired in the incident.
Some US Secret Service agents were medically examined at the scene, but none had to be hospitalized.
US Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said gunfire erupted near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW.
FBI Director Kash Patel said that the FBI was present at the scene and is supporting the US Secret Service.
Many reporters said that they heard gunshots from the side of the White House complex at around 6 pm on May 23, local time, before the US Secret Service took reporters inside. The White House blockade was lifted at around 7 pm on the same day.
President Donald Trump arrived at the White House at 4 pm, White House spokesman Steven Cheung informed earlier. It is not yet clear whether Mr. Trump was present at the White House when gunshots rang out.
