According to the results of the September 26 US election poll by The New York Times, former US President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are almost evenly matched in three important battleground states: Arizona, Georgia and North Carolina.
A poll conducted by Marist College in New York (USA) showed that Ms. Harris and Mr. Trump both had the support of 49% of potential voters asked in North Carolina.
In Arizona and Georgia, Mr Trump leads by just 1%, with 50% of likely voters polled in both states saying they would support him, while 49% lean towards Ms Harris.
The survey was conducted from September 19 to 24 among 4,643 registered voters across the three states. All respondents said they planned to vote in November, and 91% said they were certain of their choice.
The three states provide a total of 43 electoral votes. Mr Trump won North Carolina in both 2016 and 2020. He also defeated then-Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in Arizona and Georgia in 2016 but lost both states to President Joe Biden in 2020, marking the first time a Democratic candidate won Georgia since 1992.
Mr Trump has vigorously contested the election results in Georgia, claiming the election was rigged, claims that have been denied by many state officials, including Republican Governor Brian Kemp.
Another poll conducted by the Siena College Research Institute in August showed Ms. Harris with a significant lead over Mr. Trump in three other swing states: Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan.
According to poll data, Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to lead her opponent 50% to 46% across all three states.
However, in 2020, the final gap between Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump ended up being much smaller than previous polls had predicted.
A national poll released by The New York Times on September 26 also showed Ms. Harris beating Mr. Trump by 3 points. However, the newspaper noted that the former President could “easily prevail” if he wins several key states, including Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Nevada, where Ms. Harris leads by just 2%.
