Phone Arena reported that outside the Sriperumbudur factory, near the city of Chennai (India), those who initiated the protest against Samsung's labor policy put up a poster "Indefinite Strike" while hundreds of workers wearing company uniforms set up tents to block the sun and barricaded themselves in place since September 9.
Strike leader E. Muthukumar announced that the strike will continue until September 11, 2024 (local time), marking the third consecutive day.
The strike has affected nearly half of the factory’s daily output over the past two days. The demands of the union include higher wages, better working hours for workers and formal recognition by a union group backed by the Centre for Indian Trade Unions.
Samsung executives are struggling to deal with labor unrest. This is the second time Samsung has had to deal with major strikes in just 2024, with 36,500 members of the largest union of Samsung Electronics workers in South Korea also going on strike in July and August.
The strike comes ahead of India's festive season, which is a peak time for consumer shopping as people buy gifts and personal items, taking advantage of discounts offered by brands with various promotions.
However, the Sriperumbudur factory manufactures electronic products other than smartphones, so production of the new Galaxy phones will not be affected.
However, this factory still contributes 20% to 30% of Samsung's total annual revenue of $12 billion in India, so if the strike lasts for many days, it will become a difficult problem for Samsung.
