Remnants of Hurricane Nadine revive into a new storm, getting stronger every day

Hurricane Kristy - a tropical storm in the eastern Pacific - formed from the remnants of Hurricane Nadine - a tropical storm in the Atlantic.

Fox Weather's latest hurricane report says Kristy formed from the remnants of Nadine. Nadine hit Belize over the weekend, then moved across Central America into the Pacific Ocean and revived there.

Hurricane Kristy is the 11th storm to form in the eastern Pacific during the 2024 hurricane season.

Hurricane Kristy is currently 605 km west-southwest of Acapulco, Mexico. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h and is moving west-northwest at a speed of 24 km/h. Hurricane Kristy is on track to intensify violently and is likely to become a hurricane by the night of October 22.

According to the latest hurricane forecast from the US National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Kristy could strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane on October 23 and then continue to strengthen into a Category 2 and Category 3 hurricane on October 24 and 25. When it becomes a Category 3 storm, Kristy's winds could reach 185 km/h.

Forecasters in the US said that the new storm Kristy is not expected to affect any land areas because it is located in the sea area of the eastern Pacific.

The hurricane season in the eastern Pacific begins on May 15, two weeks before the Atlantic hurricane season begins. Both seasons last until November 30.

Also related to the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, the latest Hurricane Oscar is heading towards the Bahamas after making landfall in Cuba as a Category 1 hurricane, killing at least 6 people. The rapidly intensifying storm made landfall amid widespread power outages in Cuba.

On the morning of October 22, Hurricane Oscar was located 75 km southeast of Long Island in the Bahamas, with winds of 65 km/h and moving north-northeast at 19 km/h.

Oscar is forecast to bring up to 130 mm of rain across the southeastern Bahamas, with some areas seeing up to 200 mm.

Oscar has made history as the smallest hurricane, with a wind field of only about 10 km. The storm stunned meteorologists when it made its first landfall on Grand Inagua Island in the Bahamas on October 19 and a second landfall in eastern Cuba on October 20.

US hurricane expert Michael Lowry called Oscar "a huge failure in hurricane forecasting". There is no model that Oscar will strengthen into a hurricane, he noted.

Oscar is the 15th named storm and 10th hurricane of this year's Atlantic hurricane season.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that this year's Atlantic hurricane season is more intense than usual due to record-warm ocean temperatures. 17 to 25 named storms are forecast before the end of the season, including four to seven hurricanes of Category 3 or higher.

Another factor to consider for 2024 hurricane watchers is the possibility of a La Nina, which could have a large-scale impact on weather around the world.

In the Pacific, La Nina increases wind shear, making it harder for hurricanes to form. In the Atlantic, La Nina has the opposite effect, reducing wind shear and increasing the likelihood of storm formation.
