At least three people have been killed and dozens injured in a serious train accident in the southwestern state of Baden-Wurttemberg, Bild reported, citing police.
The ship carrying about 100 passengers derailed from the rails in a heavily wooded area, about 50km west of Ulm city, on the evening of July 27.
Regional interior minister Thomas Strobl told reporters that "dozens" were injured in the accident. He added that everyone on the boat had been evacuated. However, some people may still be trapped under the rubble and the trains have derailed.
Local media reported that the number of injured people was 34, citing information from emergency services. The three people are said to be in critical condition. The government did not comment on this data.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his condolences to the victims' families and said he was "very saddened" by the incident. He did not provide any casualty figures.
According to the police, the derailed train was an expressway traveling from the area towards Ulm. A large number of rescue teams, along with at least 6 helicopters, were deployed to the scene. Images released by German media show several train cars lying in a mountain pass near the railway, with at least two cars overturned.
The cause of the incident is still unclear. According to Bild, the area had heavy rain and strong storms just before.
