The Khmer Times reported that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet confirmed that on July 28, he led a Cambodian delegation to attend a special high-level meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to achieve an immediate ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand amid the escalating border conflict.
In a public statement on July 27, Prime Minister Hun Manet said the meeting would be hosted by Malaysia, co-chaired by the US and would also have the participation of China.
The ceasefire initiative comes from US President Donald Trump and has been agreed by both Cambodian and Thai leaders.
"I would like to thank Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his initiative and coordination in organizing and chairing this special session," said Hun Manet.
For his part, Mr. Jirayu Huangsap, a spokesperson for the Thai Prime Minister's Office and a member of the Thailand - Cambodia Border Management Special Activities Center (SOC-TCBSM), confirmed that the Thai government has officially accepted the invitation.
The discussions will be held at the Malaysian Prime Minister's Office in Kuala Lumpur.
Nation newspaper quoted Mr. Jirayu as saying that the Thai delegation includes: Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Sangiampongsa, General Natthapon Nakpanich, Deputy Minister of National Defense, General Secretary of Prime Minister Prommin Lertsuridej and Mr. Jirayu Huangsap, as members of the SOC-TCBSM.
Mr. Jirayu stated that the purpose of the negotiations was to find ways to a decision to restore peace, while affirming Thailand's steadfast stance in protecting sovereignty and territorial integrity.
