Indifferent to the risk of losing Russian gas, the EU will suffer the consequences

Slovakia leads efforts to maintain Russian gas flows to Europe while the EU stays out.

Reuters reported that Slovakia is trying to lead negotiations to maintain the transportation of Russian gas through Ukraine, as the contract between Kiev and Moscow expires on December 31, 2024. However, the European Union (EU) remains silent, refusing to participate in any discussions related to this issue.

Risk of gas supply disruption in Europe

Slovakia, along with its partners Hungary, Austria and Italy, have warned European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen about the energy security risks posed by a possible halt in the flow of Russian gas through Ukraine. This is a key route for gas supplies to many European countries, and disruption would have serious consequences both for the economy and for regional energy security.

Slovakia's SPP gas group has issued a strong statement, stressing that continuing gas transit through Ukraine is "the most beneficial solution, not only for gas consumers in Europe but also for Ukraine itself."

Amid a protracted conflict with Russia, Ukraine has refused to renew a contract for the transit of Russian gas through its territory. However, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said Ukraine is ready to agree to a deal if the gas does not originate from Russia.

The alternative, however, remains unclear. Slovakia and its regional partners have expressed concern that the loss of gas flows through Ukraine would significantly increase energy costs. Slovakia alone expects to lose up to €220 million in higher transit costs if it has to use alternative routes.

EU not involved in negotiations

Responding to the statement from Slovakia and its partners, a European Commission spokesperson said the EU does not support the extension of the gas transit contract through Ukraine and is not involved in any negotiations on this issue.

The EU's silence shows the lack of consensus in the approach to energy issues in Europe, especially when countries like Slovakia are under great pressure from the lack of alternatives to Russian gas.

Slovakia has held further rounds of talks with Russia's Gazprom. However, the future of gas transit through Ukraine remains uncertain, especially as Russia seeks new routes through Türkiye, Bulgaria and Romania.

Challenges ahead

Gas prices in Europe are rising sharply, with the Dutch benchmark contract up more than 5% over the past week. Uncertainty about supply is adding to the volatility in energy markets.

In this context, Slovakia calls for a common solution from EU countries to ensure energy security for the region. However, the EU's hesitation to act and the complexity of Russia-Ukraine relations make Slovakia's efforts a difficult problem.

Europe is facing a defining moment in energy security. The question is whether the EU can overcome its internal divisions and come up with a comprehensive strategy to secure gas supplies. If it does not, the greater risk is not just the loss of energy, but the wider impact on the region’s economy and stability.
