The US Aerospace Administration ( NASA) said the collision occurred near Luzon Island, Philippines on the night of September 4. The European Space Agency (ESA) estimates the collision to have occurred at 11:39 p.m. on September 4.
The Catalina Sky Survey Observatory in Arizona, USA, discovered the object, which was originally named CAQTDL2 but is now named 2024 RW1.
According to NASA, the about 1 meter-sized satellites are expected to hit Earth every two weeks, although they are rarely spotted before colliding with Earth.
"This is only the ninth satellite that humans have discovered before the collision," the European Space Agency wrote on social network X.
The minority planet is harmless because it is small enough to burn in the atmosphere.
