The major fire started on the upper floors of a building about 60m high in the southern suburbs of the capital of the Lombardy region, Italy,
"The fire then spread to the lower floors," the fire department said on Twitter, according to AFP.
A building submerged in fire in Italy has about 70 families. Authorities are contacting the families in an effort to ensure that no one is missing in the fire.
"The firefighters are moving from apartment to apartment, hitting the door to ensure that there is no one inside. But we are optimistic because everyone has time to get out," Milan head Giuseppe Sala told Corriere della Sera.
The Italian newspaper said that about 20 residents of the building suffered minor smoke inhalation. Dozens of ambulances and fire trucks were present at the scene.
According to Fox News, a giant column of black smoke rising from the Torre dei Moro building can be seen from miles away.
The fire continued to break out in the building for nearly 3 hours after dozens of fire trucks and ambulances arrived to respond to the fire.
Within an hour of the outbreak, the fire had spread from the 15th floor and quickly burned down the entire facade of the building.
