The Syrian army is completely dependent on Russian weapons and is planning to cooperate with the Russian Ministry of Defense to modernize it, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said in an interview with Sputnik.
"Two years ago, we began to implement our military modernization plan and it is clear that we will do this in cooperation with the Russian Ministry of Defense, because in the past few decades our army has relied entirely on Russian weapons," Assad said.
Regarding the purchase of Russian weapons, Mr. Assad said that it is not necessary to mention missiles here, but could be other priorities for military-technical cooperation related to the conflict.
"We have our priorities, here it's not necessarily missiles. There may be other priorities at this time related to the war on the ground. We have a comprehensive plan, but we must act in line with our priorities," Assad said when asked whether Syria would be interested in buying the S-400 or S-300 air defense system.
Mr. Assad noted that Syria often does not talk about the details of its military plan, but in general, it is necessary to modernize the Syrian army in all aspects.
