The Portuguese president swam to the site of two women doing kayaking that overturned on a beach in Alvgarve and helped them over the weekend, according to BBC.
The British news agency reported that President Rebelo de Sousa was speaking to the press at Praia Beach, Alvor, when he noticed female tourists whose boats capsized.
Video recording the incident shows that when the Portuguese President swam to support the two female tourists, another man was there to help them capsize the boat back. In addition, a water motorcyclist was approaching to assist.
The man on the water motorbike then tried to pull the kayak boat back to shore.
The 71-year-old president told the press after helping two female tourists that their boats were swept away by strong waves, and both of them could not swim.
President Rebelo de Sousa is currently on leave in Algarve in an effort to promote tourism there.
Portugal's economy is largely based on tourism, which has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
