President Donald Trump announced this content on May 11 on the social network Truth Social.
I will sign one of the executive decrees with the most important impact in the history of our country. The price of prescription drugs and pharmaceuticals will decrease, almost immediately, from 30% to 80%" - President Trump shared.
The US leader emphasized that he will implement a "national treasure" policy, according to which the US will only pay the drug price at the same level as the country with the lowest price in the world.
The decree is expected to be signed at a time when the Trump administration is looking to impose tariffs on imported pharmaceuticals.
According to CNN, the tariffs could aggravate shortages of some drugs, especially starting drugs, and eventually increase prices.
Last month, President Trump signed another executive order to standardize payments from the national health insurance program Medicare for prescription drugs, including drugs for cancer patients, regardless of where they are treated. The White House newspaper at that time said the decree could reduce up to 60% of expenses for patients.
