TASS reported that on May 26, German Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (of the Social Democratic Party - SPD) rejected Berlin's change in stance regarding the limitation of the range of German weapons when Ukraine used them to attack Russian territory.
Speaking at a press conference in Berlin, Mr. Klingbeil frankly stated that Germany currently has no new agreements regarding fire range that goes beyond what the previous government has done.
SPD lawmaker Ralf Stegner also has a similar view.
Stegner said that Prime Minister Friedrich Merz's public statements about removing the range limit were "un ichorable", while emphasizing that any action to escalate tensions was wrong.
According to lawmaker Stegner, the only way to resolve the conflict is diplomacy.
Also on May 26, Prime Minister Friedrich Merz said Berlin would no longer limit Ukraine's ability to carry out long-range strikes deep into Russian territory, even with German-made weapons.
Speaking at the EuropaForum, Mr. Merz said that Kiev needs to have the ability to "effectively defend" against Russia and that being able to only attack targets in Ukraine is not enough.
The move is seen as a suggestion for the possibility of supplying long-range Taurus missiles - a type of weapon that the previous German government had refused to provide.
The Taurus missile has a range of about 500km, capable of hitting deep into Russian territory, and can even reach the capital Moscow.
On the Russian side, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the German Chancellor's statement "dangerous", warning that these actions go against efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Ukrainian conflict.
Mr. Peskov said that Prime Minister Merz's decision goes against his desire to find a political solution and make every effort to resolve the conflict.
