The French government said thieves broke into the Louvre Museum in Paris through a window on October 19, stealing invaluable jewelry.
The French Ministry of Home Affairs reported that thieves stole the jewelry at around 9:30 a.m. on October 19 when the museum had opened to visitors and broke into the Galeries d' Apollon building, which houses the French Royal Jewelry.
"The investigation has begun and a detailed list of stolen items is being prepared. In addition to market value, these artifacts also have invaluable heritage and historical value" - the statement stated.
The statement added that no injuries were reported to visitors, staff of the Louvre or law enforcement when the theft occurred.
The Louvre - which preserves paintings Mona Lisa by artist Leonardo da Vinci - informed social network X that it will close on October 19 for "special reasons".
Earlier this year, officials in the Louvre asked the French government for urgent assistance to restore and renovate the museum's old exhibition rooms and much better protect the museum's works of art.
Last year, the Louvre welcomed 8.7 million visitors.
