The 2024 World Taekwondo Championships are attracting the participation of 1,727 athletes from 77 countries and territories in Hong Kong (China). The Vietnamese taekwondo delegation has 47 members participating, including 7 coaches and 40 athletes.
On the first day of competition (November 30), the Vietnamese taekwondo team made fans proud when they won the world gold medal after 8 years of waiting.
Six athletes, including Nguyen Thi Y Binh, Tran Phuong Nhung, Nguyen Thanh Hien Linh, Nguyen Ngoc Minh Hy, Tran Dang Khoa, and Ho Thanh An, won gold medals in the creative team event for the over-17 age group.
Continuing the success, on December 2, Vietnamese taekwondo continued to impress when it defeated strong opponents from Korea to win the second gold medal in the U50 standard women's team event.
In the first test, the trio Chau Tuyet Van, Nguyen Thi Le Kim, and Lien Thi Tuyet Mai had an excellent performance with 8,780 points, but were defeated by their Korean opponent in presentation (5,320 compared to 5,340 points).
However, in the second test, Vietnamese athletes showed their bravery and won with 8,800 points, while Korea only achieved 8,700 points.
In the end, the Vietnamese taekwondo team won the gold medal with a total score of 8,790 points, while Korea received the silver medal with 8,740 points.
For Chau Tuyet Van, this gold medal has special meaning as it is the 5th world gold medal in her career, marking 10 years since she first won world gold medals in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014.
