Analyzing the opportunities of the Vietnam women's volleyball team at the 33rd SEA Games

MINH PHONG |

The Vietnamese women's volleyball team entered a favorable group at the 33rd SEA Games, opening up a great opportunity to win a ticket to the semi-finals and aiming for a gold medal.

At the 33rd SEA Games, the Vietnam Women's Volleyball Team entered Group B with the teams of Indonesia, Myanmar and Malaysia. Meanwhile, Group A includes Thailand, the Philippines and Singapore.

In terms of the strength correlation, the group of the Vietnamese team is considered quite favorable. The opponents are all names that coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet and his team have surpassed many times in recent times.

Compared to Group A - where Thailand and the Philippines are present, Group B is somewhat lighter in both expertise and competitive pressure. This gives the Vietnamese team a great chance to advance to the semi-finals, even saving energy for the key matches behind.

Among the 3 opponents in the same group, Indonesia is considered the team with the ability to cause the most difficulties. However, their recent form has been unstable.

Most recently, at the recent SEA V.League 2025, the Indonesian team played below expectations, even worse than the Philippines. Although the Megawati star is still playing in Turkey, the team from the archipelago lacks uniformity and does not have squad depth. Megawati alone can hardly turn the situation against a Vietnam with good form and stable forces.

The remaining two opponents, Myanmar and Malaysia, are both rated much lower. The Myanmar women's volleyball team has not made an impression at the SEA Games for many years, while Malaysia is in the process of rebuilding and has not had any outstanding achievements.

In recent confrontations, the Vietnamese team often wins by a large margin against both teams, thereby further strengthening their confidence in a ticket to the semi-finals.

The Vietnamese women's volleyball team entered the 33rd SEA Games with a series of impressive achievements in 2025. Thanh Thuy and her teammates won the runner-up position in the first stage of SEA V.League, then excellently overcame Thailand to win the second stage.

In addition, the Vietnamese team will continue to win the AVC Nations Cup 2025 and for the first time in history will participate in the FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship 2025.

In the current Vietnam squad, there are two athletes competing abroad, main striker Tran Thi Thanh Thuy and middle blocker Tran Thi Bich Thuy. Both are maintaining stable performance, and are expected to bring many differences to the home team.

Thanh Thuy is still a spiritual and professional support, while Bich Thuy is increasingly affirming her irreplaceable role in the middle blocker position.

In addition, Nhu Quynh, Khanh Dang, Kieu Trinh, Lam Oanh and Kim Thoa have also gradually affirmed their expertise, competed in a tight manner and brought great trust.

Although the group stage situation is quite favorable, coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet and his team still have to concentrate to the maximum for each match. The goal of reaching the semi-finals is feasible, but what the team is aiming for is to touch the SEA Games gold medal for the first time.

The biggest challenge is Group A, where Thailand has been the strongest team in the region for many years. Although they defeated them at the SEA V.League, at the SEA Games, the Vietnamese team still could not overcome Thailand in the final match. If both teams reach the final, it will be a very anticipated rematch.

With current performance, stable personnel and a determined competitive spirit, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team is facing a great opportunity to make history at the 33rd SEA Games.
