The 2-3 defeat to Indonesia in the opening match was not simply a defeat. The unfortunate thing is that the Vietnamese women's volleyball team had all the necessary advantages to close the match in 3 or 4 sets, but then gradually lost control.
When advantage becomes pressure
The first two sets showed that the Vietnamese team could completely play proactively against Indonesia. The team started well, created pressure from the serve stage, maintained attacking efficiency and especially made good use of situations on the net.
Bich Thuy played well in quick attacks and blocks, while Pham Quynh Huong left many marks in the main attacking position. Vietnam won 25-20 and 25-18 respectively to lead 2-0.
At that time, Indonesia did not show that they could create a comeback. But Vietnam's problem reappeared as soon as the opponent began to change their playing style. From set 3, Indonesia strengthened their defense, served more pressure and organized more stable attacks.
Conversely, Vietnam began to lose certainty in the first step, attacking situations no longer reached the accuracy of the first two sets. The gap was therefore gradually narrowed.
Vietnam still had moments of resurgence, even equalizing 19-19 in set 3, but Indonesia was the team that handled better in the decisive points and won 25-22.
Set 4 continues to be a story worth considering. Indonesia created a gap, while Vietnam had to continuously chase. Thanh Thuy was brought onto the court to increase attacking power, helping the team shorten from 9-16 to 19-21. However, when the match entered the decisive moment, Vietnam still could not create a breakthrough. Indonesia won 25-20 and brought the match back to the starting line.
The problem is not just with one individual
Just less than a week ago, the Vietnamese women's team won against Indonesia 3-1 in stage 1 of the SEA V.Cup after losing the first set. This time, the story took place in the opposite direction. Vietnam won the first two sets but could not finish the match.
This shows that the problem is not simply whether the squad has or does not have Thanh Thuy, or whether an individual plays well or not well. When the opponent changes their approach, Vietnam has not maintained the quality of play at the necessary level.
In particular, the first step began to be unstable, leaving the setter with not many options. When the first step was not good enough, the attacking system also became more predictable. The wing attacks had to face Indonesia's better-organized blocks, while fast attacking options were no longer deployed as regularly as at the beginning of the match.
That was when Vietnam began to fall into a passive position. Thanh Thuy's entry on the court in set 4 showed that the coaching staff needed more options to change the game. But when an individual was expected to make a difference, while the entire system had not returned to a stable state, effectiveness could hardly appear immediately.
Lessons greater than a defeat
Set 5 was the saddest ending. Vietnam still had the first points, Thanh Thuy once helped the team equalize 3-3, but Indonesia quickly took the lead. Vietnam had difficulty in organizing continuous attacks, while the opponent maintained solidity in defense and blocked the ball to win 15-9.
From leading 2-0 to losing 2-3, Vietnam lost three consecutive sets. This is more worrying than the result.
In volleyball, a match can change after just a few kick-off rounds. But a team with ambition to compete at the continental level needs to know how to react when the game reverses.
When the opponent starts playing better, the team must also have a corresponding change plan. The defeat to Indonesia can be seen as an important test for the framework being built for bigger goals in 2026.
SEA V.Cup is a playground for the Vietnamese team to test personnel, find a framework towards the Asian Championship and ASIAD. Therefore, the result is not the only factor to pay attention to. But testing does not mean that we can ignore the issues of stability, pressure tolerance and adjustment ability right in the match.
Vietnam still has two matches with the Philippines and Thailand in stage 2. After the defeat against Indonesia, what is expected is not just a victory, but the way the team reacts.
Because if they continue to lead and then lose the advantage, the problem will no longer lie in a specific match. That will be the story of match control bravery, which the Vietnamese women's team must improve if they want to take another step in bigger playgrounds.
