On the London and New York exchanges, the coffee market continued to extend its green streak. At the end of the most recent trading session, the price of Robusta coffee in London surpassed the $4,500/ton mark. The January 2025 delivery term increased by more than 2% (equivalent to $95/ton), listed at $4,632/ton. The March 2025 delivery term also recorded an increase of 2.04% (equivalent to $91/ton), currently standing at $4,552/ton.
In the New York Arabica coffee market, the December 2024 contract increased more strongly than the London Robusta coffee futures. The December 2024 futures increased by more than 3% (equivalent to 8.10 cents/lb), standing at 271.65 cents/lb. The March 2025 contract recorded a remarkable increase compared to yesterday's closing session, currently standing at 271.20 cents/lb.
The reason for the continued upward trend in coffee prices is the tightening supply. Brazilian producers are holding back their stocks in anticipation of higher prices, reducing the supply of coffee on the market. The drought in Brazil’s largest Arabica coffee producing region continues to support Arabica coffee prices on the international market.
Businesses and investors are keeping a close eye on US trade policy following Republican candidate Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election. Speculation about the policy on agricultural products, especially coffee, could push coffee prices higher in the coming time.
In Vietnam, Robusta coffee supply was also limited as coffee exports in October fell 11.6% month-on-month to 45,412 tonnes.
Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Association (Dak Lak province) forecasts that the 2024/25 crop output may decrease by 5-10% compared to the previous crop due to thousands of hectares of coffee being affected by drought in the 2024 dry season, affecting the development of coffee trees.
Extreme weather in Vietnam’s main coffee growing regions such as Gia Lai, Dak Lak and Lam Dong, coupled with the impact of recent storms and heavy rains, has raised concerns about potential short-term supply disruptions.
Gia Lai is currently a key coffee exporting province, achieving an export turnover of 750 million USD in the first 10 months of 2024, an increase of 29.39% over the same period last year.
