Although the price of live pigs in the Mekong Delta region is currently down compared to a month ago, ranging from 62,000 - 65,000 VND/kg, the pork market at markets in the city Can Tho is still at a fairly high level.
At the pork stall of Ms. Nguyen Kim Lien - trader at Tan An market (Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city), the price has increased from 10,000 - 15,000 VND/kg, depending on the type.
"The prices at slaughterhouses and wholesale markets are high, combined with the supply being affected by the epidemic, so pork prices have increased. However, purchasing power is currently decreasing. Normally I sell 50 kg/day for about a week now. Only about 35-40 kg/day, the price is high so people switch to buying other foods" - Ms. Lien said.

Recorded at some traditional markets in Can Tho City such as Xuan Khanh, Tan An, Ba Bo... pork tenderloin costs 120,000 - 135,000 VND/kg, pork belly from 140,000 - 160,000 VND/kg, spare ribs at 180,000 - 210,000 VND/kg...
Accordingly, this price is considered by consumers to be close to the price of pork at convenience stores and supermarkets. According to records, at supermarkets and commercial centers in Can Tho City such as Co.opmart, Lotte, Go... pork prices range from 105,000 - 263,000 VND/kg, depending on the type.
Ms. Pham Huynh Nhu - a tutor in Phong Dien district, Can Tho city - said: At the market, 1 kg of lean thigh meat is currently 165,000 VND/kg, this price has not decreased a month ago. If you compare prices in supermarkets, the difference is only about 10,000 - 15,000 VND/kg, while more than a month ago, this difference was about 30,000 - 35,000 VND/kg.
This also makes Ms. Nhu cautious, turning to other food alternatives or hunting for sales at the supermarket.

"Pork is a food that my family has become accustomed to and is difficult to change. If it is kept at this high level, going to the market will cost you a lot of money. Therefore, these past few days, I went to the supermarket, even though the prices here are high. "But if there are promotions and sales, the price of pork is still lower than at the market, otherwise we can change to another dish" - Ms. Nhu said.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Can Tho City, by the end of June 2024, the city had a total herd of pigs of 127,680. Currently, the city's livestock output supplies 50-70% of market demand, with the remaining quantity imported from other provinces to adequately supply consumers.
