The sanctions against Russia were discussed by leaders at the regular summit on June 24.
Although no new package of Russian sanctions is being prepared, work has been deployed to identify areas that may be subject to sanctions, officials familiar with the EU's discussion process revealed.
EU officials point out that gold could be one of the next sanctions targets against Russia.
A source familiar with the sanctions told Reuters that the European Commission is working to add gold to the list of sanctions against Russia.
However, the source said it is still unclear whether this measure will ban gold exports and imports or both.
The EU has approved six packages of sanctions against Russia after the war in Ukraine, including a phase-by-phase embargo on Russian oil imports.
