On the morning of February 26, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh had breakfast and had an intimate and effective meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on the occasion of the Prime Minister's visit to Vietnam and attendance at the 2nd ASEAN Future Forum in Hanoi (February 25-26, 2025).
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the meeting, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh warmly welcomed and expressed his pleasure at welcoming Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim back to visit Vietnam; emphasizing that the visit is very meaningful in the context that the two countries have just upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and Malaysia is currently holding the role of ASEAN Chair.
The Malaysian Prime Minister affirmed that Vietnam is Malaysia's leading important partner in the region and pledged to be determined to substantially promote cooperation between the two countries in accordance with the newly established Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The two Prime Ministers expressed their satisfaction with the development of bilateral relations in recent times, especially since the official visit to Vietnam by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim (July 2023) and the official visit to Malaysia by General Secretary To Lam (11.2024).
Political cooperation and trust have been enhanced through maintaining meetings and exchanges of high-level delegations and all levels; bilateral cooperation mechanisms from politics - diplomacy to defense, security, economy, culture... continue to be effective.
Trade - investment cooperation will develop more comprehensively and deeply; in ASEAN, Malaysia is currently the second largest trading partner of Vietnam and the third largest investor in Vietnam.
The cooperation between the two countries has many breakthroughs in key areas such as defense, security, energy, labor, agriculture, food security, etc., and even new areas such as green economy, digital economy, etc.
The two Prime Ministers emphasized the importance of marine and ocean cooperation; strengthen cooperation in resolving issues at sea and establishing a hotline against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing; promote cooperation in education, training, labor, agriculture, culture, sports, increase flight frequency.
Discussing multilateral and regional cooperation, the two sides highly appreciated the two countries' regular coordination and mutual support for candidates to international organizations; agreed to closely coordinate with each other and other ASEAN countries to build a united ASEAN, strengthen intra-bloc cooperation, and promote its central role in handling strategic issues in the region.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed his support for Malaysia in successfully damining the role of ASEAN Chair 2025, towards a "Sustainable and Inclusive" ASEAN in line with the theme of ASEAN this year; believing that Malaysia will lead ASEAN to achieve great achievements, increasingly united and self-reliant.
