On April 3, the Department of Home Affairs of Quang Tri province confirmed that the locality is currently studying a merger plan in the direction of reducing from 119 commune-level administrative units to about 60 units, or a reduction of 50%.
The study of the plan to merge and reduce the number of communes by 50% is based on Conclusion No. 137 of the Politburo and the Secretariat dated March 28, 2025 on the project to reorganize and reorganize administrative units at all levels and build a model of organizing local government at 2 levels.
Previously, Quang Tri province studied the plan to merge communes in the direction of reducing up to 70% of units, from 119 commune-level administrative units to just over 30 units.
"Currently, it is in the process of research, so it is not clear which commune will merge with which commune. We also consider specific factors such as borders, islands, and ethnic minority areas to arrange them appropriately" - Mr. Ngo Quang Chien, Director of the Department of Home Affairs said.
