On the afternoon of June 9, at the National Assembly House, Politburo Member, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man met with Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao.
At the meeting, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man expressed his pleasure to welcome Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, emphasizing that the visit is an important milestone, contributing to strengthening the friendly and cooperative relations between Vietnam and Timor-Leste.
Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao affirmed the importance of friendship and cooperation with Vietnam; thanked Vietnam for always supporting Timor-Leste in the process of joining ASEAN; wished Vietnam to continue to share development experiences, regional and international integration.
The National Assembly Chairwoman highly appreciated the results of the high-level exchanges of the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste with Vietnamese leaders; welcomed the signing of the Agreement on visa exemption for ordinary passport holders by the two countries, creating favorable conditions for people-to-people exchanges, promoting economic, trade, tourism cooperation and deepening friendly relations between the two countries.
Exchanging views on bilateral cooperation, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man expressed his pleasure to see Vietnam - Timor-Leste relations continue to develop positively over the past two decades since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2002; in which trade turnover maintained its growth momentum, reaching 18.7 million USD in 2025; believing that the two sides still have much room to promote economic, trade, investment cooperation, as well as in the fields of agriculture, oil and gas, fisheries, construction, culture, and tourism.
The National Assembly Chairwoman requested the Governments of the two countries to continue to promote negotiations and sign new cooperation documents; affirmed that the Vietnamese National Assembly will create favorable conditions for the signing and implementation of bilateral cooperation agreements.
The National Assembly Chairwoman also proposed that the two sides continue to review and effectively implement the signed documents, including the Framework Agreement on Technical and Economic Cooperation signed in April 2010; encourage expanding cooperation in the fields of education and training, agriculture, digital transformation and human resource development.
Regarding parliamentary cooperation, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man proposed that the National Assemblies of the two countries strengthen high-level delegation exchanges, exchanges between the agencies of the National Assembly and National Assembly deputies; share legislative and supervisory experiences, decide on important issues of the country; strengthen consultations, coordination and mutual support at AIPA, IPU and regional and international interparliamentary forums.
The National Assembly Chairwoman affirmed that the National Assembly of Vietnam supports the National Assembly of Timor-Leste becoming an official member of AIPA.
Prime Minister of Timor-Leste Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao highly appreciated the role of the Parliaments of the two countries in creating a favorable legal foundation and framework to promote bilateral cooperation; proposed further strengthening exchanges and communications between the legislative bodies of the two countries.
Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao affirmed her desire to promote substantive cooperation with Vietnam in the fields of trade, investment, agriculture, education and training, human resource development, digital transformation and people-to-people exchanges; as well as continue to closely coordinate at ASEAN and regional and international forums, contributing to peace, stability and development in the region.
