The Office of the Government has just issued document No. 7178/VPCP-CN dated October 4, 2024 conveying the opinion of Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha on the investment plan for Con Dao Airport.
Deputy Prime Minister of the Government requested the Ministry of Transport to urgently preside over and coordinate with the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province to clearly report on the research and implementation of the project investment plan under the PPP method as directed by the Prime Minister (the PPP investment form is applied to the entire project or only to some specific items of the project; reasons).
Based on the above report, the Ministry of Transport and the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province agreed and proposed the optimal investment plan for the Con Dao Airport Project to ensure synchronization and efficiency, and reported to the Prime Minister before October 7, 2024.
The Ministry of Transport and the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province are responsible for implementing the project according to their authority.
Previously, the Prime Minister approved the overall adjustment of the Master Plan for Con Dao construction, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province until 2045, in which the forecast scale of tourists by 2030 is about 1-1.2 million visitors/year, in 2045 about 1.7-2 million visitors/year.
According to the master plan for the development of the national airport system in the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, Con Dao Airport is planned for the period up to 2030 with a capacity of about 2 million passengers/year, and a vision to 2050 with a capacity of about 3 million passengers/year.
Currently, the runway and taxiway at Con Dao Airport have degraded (built in 2004), with poor load-bearing capacity. The 30m wide runway does not meet the standards for operating code C aircraft, only meeting the requirements for operating aircraft such as ATR72 and equivalent (Embraer E190/E195 with reduced load).
The Ministry of Transport is planning to upgrade and expand Con Dao Airport to receive large aircraft, ensuring passenger handling capacity.
